The Star Online > Nation New landfills needed
in Pahang
Citing the landfill in
Temerloh, Hoh said the
site had already exceeded its capacity and waste material was now being sent
to the neighbouring district of Bera. “The landfills in Kuantan and in Kampung Cheroh, Raub, are also nearing
their capacity and there is a need to open new sites. “We are identifying a
new site in Raub while another site has been
earmarked near Jerangau, bordering Kemaman, Terengganu,” he told The
Star. Hoh said all the 14
districts in Pahang had at least one landfill each
but due to scarcity of land, incinerators were being built in Hoh said the incinerator
project in Kampung Raja, Cameron Highlands, had
received the green light from the Federal Government and work was currently
in progress. “So far, all the
landfill sites in Pahang are located far away from
water catchment areas. “There is no danger of
waste water seeping into water treatment plants,” he said, adding that if a
landfill was located too far away, the cost of transportation would be a
major problem. Hoh revealed that an
allocation of between RM1mil and RM1.5mil was needed just to build the
infrastructure of a landfill over one acre of land, not including other
maintenance costs. However, he said it
was still cheaper than building an incinerator as all the parts needed to be
imported. “The state government
does not have the financial means to carry out these projects and needs
assistance from the Federal Government. |
